Winter Tire Season 2026: A Simple Car Prep Checklist for Canadian Roads

Car Ice Scraper with snow brush for winter driving prep

Frosty mornings are back, and with them comes the yearly question for Canadian drivers: when should the winter tires go on? This month, the answer has been all over the news. CTV News Kitchener ran a segment on October 14 about whether it is already time for the swap, and on October 10 Narcity Québec asked CAA-Québec the same thing. The short version: don't wait for the first big snowfall.

Below is a plain-language checklist built from what CAA, Transport Canada and the Québec government are saying this fall, plus a few handy picks from our Car collection to help you get the car ready.

Use the 7°C rule, not the snow forecast

Transport Canada explains that all-season and summer tires start to lose their flexibility once it gets colder than 7°C, which means less grip, even on dry roads. Winter tires are made to stay soft and grippy at much lower temperatures. CAA-Québec spokesperson Jesse Caron told Narcity that, from October on, there is really no bad time to switch. Once the average daily temperature drops below 7°C, it is time to change.

Timing depends on where you live. In Québec, Caron said northern regions such as the Côte-Nord and Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean can make sense by mid-October, the Québec City area by late October or early November, and Montréal and the Outaouais up to about mid-November. Snow can still show up early: a light layer briefly covered the Réserve faunique des Laurentides on October 7.

Book early and know the rules

The other reason not to wait is the rush. Caron said shops get swamped once everyone reacts at the same time, so it is smart to book now even if the appointment is later in the month. That matters even more if you need new tires. He noted that SUVs and electric vehicles often use wider, pricier tires, and supplier stock gets harder to restock as the season goes on.

In Québec, winter tires are the law from December 1 to March 15. The provincial government says the rule covers every vehicle registered in Québec, rentals included, and the tires must carry the three-peaked mountain and snowflake pictogram or be studded. Fines run from $200 to $300. Ontario has no winter tire law, but CAA South Central Ontario offers its auto insurance customers an extra 5 percent off when four qualifying winter tires are installed by November 20, with conditions.

Check tire pressure when it's cold

Here is a tip many drivers miss. Transport Canada points out that a tire that reads fine in a warm garage will be underinflated once it is below zero outside, because pressure falls as the air cools. Check your tires when they are cold, before driving, and use the pressure listed on the label on the driver's door edge or door post. Never go above the maximum printed on the tire sidewall, and remember to check the spare too.

A digital gauge gives a quick, easy-to-read number, so a monthly check takes only a minute. Transport Canada also recommends installing winter tires as a matched set of four and not relying on tires worn close to 4 mm of tread on snowy roads.

Get ready for a winter of swings

This winter may be less predictable than usual. In a September 7 article, CAA North & East Ontario noted that the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration put the chance of a very strong El Niño developing this fall and winter at more than 90 percent. For Ontario, that could mean more swings between mild days and hard freezes, and a higher risk of freezing rain in eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Valley.

CAA's advice is practical. Have your battery checked before the cold sets in, since no-start calls are among the most common winter breakdowns. Replace worn wiper blades, keep winter-rated washer fluid topped up, and leave extra time and space when temperatures hover around freezing.

An ice scraper is on CAA's winter kit list for good reason. A model with a snow brush lets you clear the roof, lights and glass before you pull out, not just a small peephole on the windshield.

Pack a simple winter car kit

Along with the scraper, CAA suggests a blanket, flashlight, first-aid kit, compact shovel, jumper cables and traction aids. Keeping it all in one place makes it easy to grab what you need on a dark, snowy evening.

A collapsible trunk organizer keeps the kit together and stops it from sliding around, and it folds down when you need the space for groceries or holiday gifts.

CAA also reminds drivers heading out in bad weather to keep the phone fully charged and let someone know their route and arrival time. A small charger that stays plugged in means you are not caught with a dead battery in a storm.

Keep the inside comfortable, too

Winter boots bring in salt, slush and grit that end up ground into the mats. A quick pass with a handheld vacuum every week or two keeps the mess under control.
