Fall Back 2026: Cozy Lighting Ideas for Darker Evenings at Home

Sunset Projection Lamp casting a warm glow for darker fall evenings

Here in Ontario, it is almost time to fall back. At 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, clocks in Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and most of Nunavut go back one hour. You get a bonus hour of sleep that night, but the trade-off shows up fast: sunset arrives about an hour earlier, and suddenly it is dark before many of us have left work.

This year is a little different across the country, too. Below we explain what is changing, then share some simple, cozy lighting ideas and seven picks from our Home collection that make those long, dark evenings feel warmer.

What Is Different About the Time Change This Year

For the first time, a big part of Canada is skipping the November change. British Columbia has moved to permanent year-round time, now called Pacific time, and the province says the switch is meant to cut disruption for families and keep an extra hour of evening light through the winter. Alberta has done the same with its new Alberta Time, and Manitoba and the Northwest Territories are also staying put this fall. Saskatchewan and Yukon already stopped changing their clocks years ago.

So if you live in the East, you will be turning clocks back while friends and family out West will not. Phones and laptops update on their own, but it is worth double-checking the oven, the car and any plug-in timers around the house. A call to relatives in Vancouver or Calgary may also land at a different hour than you are used to.

Why Earlier Darkness Feels So Heavy

Losing an hour of evening daylight changes the mood of a home. You walk in to dark hallways, flick on a bright overhead light, and the whole place can feel harsh instead of restful. The fix does not have to be a renovation. Designers often talk about layering light: a few small, warm sources at different heights instead of one big ceiling fixture. Layered lighting is cheap, renter-friendly and easy to change with the seasons.

Five Cozy Lighting Ideas for Darker Evenings

1. Set a soft glow that turns on by itself

Timers are your friend once the sun sets before dinner. Our Flameless LED Tea Light Candles give a warm white flicker with a melted-edge look, and a built-in timer keeps them on for 6 hours and off for 18. Set them once on a mantel, windowsill or dining table and they light up around the same time every evening, with no open flame near curtains, kids or pets.

2. Drape fairy lights where shadows collect

Thin string lights are an easy way to brighten a bookshelf, a mirror or the top of a headboard. The Silver Wire LED Fairy String Lights run a full 10 metres on a flexible silver wire with blue LEDs, and they are battery powered with AA batteries (sold separately), so you can place them far from any outlet.

3. Bring back a little "sunset" after dark

If you miss the golden hour you used to get after work, a projection lamp can bring that colour back indoors. The Sunset Projection Lamp casts a warm, sunset-style glow across a wall, which makes a living room corner or bedroom feel calm in the evening. It is also a fun backdrop for photos and video calls.

4. Light the path, not the whole house

Darker mornings and evenings mean more stumbling around hallways and closets. The LED Sensor Night Light plugs into a standard two-prong outlet (it fits Canadian outlets) and comes on by itself when the room gets dark, which is handy for hallways, bathrooms and nurseries. For closets, pantries and cabinets, the rechargeable Motion Sensor LED Cabinet Light uses a motion sensor and 10 LEDs to switch on when you open the door, so you can find your boots without waking anyone.

5. Make a reading nook you actually want to sit in

Long evenings are perfect for a book and a blanket. The USB-rechargeable Clip-On LED Book Light has a flexible neck, so you can read in bed or on the couch without lighting up the whole room. Add a soft cushion in a warm colour, like our bronze Velvet Throw Pillow Cover, which comes in four sizes from 35 x 50 cm up to 60 x 60 cm (cover only, insert not included), and your sofa corner turns into the coziest spot in the house.

A Quick Fall-Back Checklist

  • Change the clocks that do not update on their own: oven, microwave, car and wall clocks.
  • Reset any plug-in timers so lamps come on at the right hour.
  • Swap one bright overhead light for two or three softer, warmer sources.
  • Put a night light in the hallway or bathroom for early mornings and late nights.
  • Plan your calls to the West Coast and Alberta around the new time gap.

The days will keep getting shorter until late December, so a little planning now makes the whole winter feel brighter. A few warm lights, a soft cushion and a good book go a long way.
